About Us

The Environmental Systems Analysis Research Center (ESARC) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit research organization. ESARC was founded in Boulder, Colorado. ESARC’s proximity to the University of Colorado and internationally recognized federal research centers enhances opportunities for collaboration with our colleagues at those institutions.

ESARC was established primarily to conduct research on global and regional climate and environmental change, large-scale ocean-ice-atmosphere system dynamics, and environmental remote sensing from satellites. The high northern latitudes and the Arctic are areas of particular interest, as symbolized by our aurora borealis ("Northern lights") logo. Some representative examples of our activities are research and assessments focused on:

  • Climate change: Melting of the perennial sea-ice cover in the Arctic, a forerunner of enhanced greenhouse global warming

  • Climate variability: North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Icelandic Low,  the major storm center of the North Atlantic

  • Physical oceanography: Long-term (decadal to century-scale) variability in the northern North Atlantic

  • Satellite remote sensing: Sea ice, ice sheets and glaciers, oceans and forests

  • Environment: Boreal forests (taiga) of Siberia, a natural resource accounting for more than half of the world's coniferous stands
